Eight Words That Changed Our Journey | The Story of EcoLit Club

Our Story

From our early academic days, we witnessed how economic knowledge created unequal opportunities in communities around us. We observed how financial literacy could transform lives, and we were taught that with the right understanding, anything is possible.

Unfortunately, factors outside of anyone’s control make it hard for some people to grasp economic concepts: things like educational access, socioeconomic background, geographic location, and systemic barriers to financial education.

We wake up every day determined to use our resources to create a world where everyone has the opportunity to understand and navigate the economic systems that impact their lives. Most importantly, we believe this: All individuals deserve equal access to economic knowledge. That’s why we made the decision to establish EcoLit Club to help bridge the economic literacy gap.

The challenge when we started out was how to do that in a meaningful and high-impact way. We were drawn to issues that emerged from our own experiences, so we began organizing economic literacy workshops in local communities. As we engaged with more diverse audiences and traveled to different regions, we also became curious about the economic inequalities further from home.

One day, we read a report about millions of individuals in underserved communities who remain trapped in cycles of poverty due to a lack of basic financial and economic understanding—concepts that were readily taught in privileged educational settings. That deeply concerned us. As young economists, it hit us especially hard. If there’s anything more troubling than economic hardship, we said to each other, then surely, it’s preventable economic hardship.

We sent the article to our economics professor with a note:

“Professor, maybe we can do something about this.”

Those eight words changed the rest of our journey.

  • The gender gap in financial literacy averages 7% globally, with women having lower literacy rates
  • Only 13% of school-aged children receive financial education as part of their curriculum
  • Economic literacy rates show a 28% disparity between urban and rural communities
  • Individuals with higher economic literacy earn 25% more over their lifetimes

Our Growing Impact

We started consulting experts, learning from local communities, and researching economic literacy more deeply. We worked to figure out how we might use our voices to raise the visibility of economic education, and how our resources could start transforming lives and communities.

We also expanded our work from simply providing economic information to ensuring that every student had equal opportunity to learn, understand, and apply economic concepts to their daily lives.

As our commitment grew, a group of dedicated economics students and faculty contributed their time and resources to EcoLit Club, making it one of the most impactful student-led economic literacy initiatives in the region. When several local businesses pledged their support to our foundation, it allowed us to raise our ambitions about taking on the toughest, most important economic literacy challenges.

Our club has spent countless volunteer hours since its inception, and we believe that’s helped our partners make a difference. How do we know? We are committed to measuring progress so we can see what’s working and what isn’t. We’d like to share one chart we find most hopeful.

It’s this: The number of students who demonstrate improved economic decision-making after participating in our programs. It’s increased by 68% since our founding. Thousands more young people are making informed economic choices. That makes us optimistic.
